Hutto, Texas

An Old Town Coming to Life

Approximately 27 miles northeast of Austin, lies the Hutto Commercial Historic District, which locals commonly refer to as “Old Town”. The buildings in the district reflect Hutto’s rich culture, bringing visitors and residents back to the charming culture of the 1800s. This historic railroad town is now a fast-growing community that boasts a great quality of life just outside the Austin/Round Rock metro area. In the last decade, Hutto has transformed from a small rural Central Texas town of only 1,250 to one of Austin’s fastest-growing suburbs with now more than 20,000 residents!

But wait, why are there so many concrete hippos in and around Hutto, you ask? The legend goes, in 1915 a circus train came through town with a brief layover. Suddenly, a hippo escaped its enclosure and made its way over to Cottonwood Creek. Now you know hippos are drawn to water like a moth to a flame. Well, the circus workers tried multiple times to remove the hippo from the muddy water without much success but much to the delight and entertainment of the locals. Eventually, the hippo was reunited with the circus and placed back into its enclosure but it was not long after, the school adopted the hippo as its official mascot.

In 2003, the Texas Legislature recognized Hutto as the “Official Hippo Capital of Texas.” The Hutto Chamber of Commerce arranged for a seven-ton concrete hippo named “Henrietta” to be placed along East Street in 1986.

So now you know the back story of why there are so many decorated concrete hippos in and around Hutto. Why not show your hippo spirit by uniquely decorating your own hippo? Here is a map of some of the many hippos around town. Town Website for the Hippo tour.

Texas Department of Family and Protective Services

“The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) works with communities to promote safe and healthy families and protect children and vulnerable adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. We do this through investigations, services and referrals, and prevention programs.

DFPS has five major programs that do this important work:

Adult Protective Services • Protects the elderly and people with disabilities from abuse, neglect, and exploitation through investigations and services.

Child Protective Services • Protects children from abuse and neglect through services, foster care, and adoption.

Child Protective Investigations • Investigates reports of child abuse or neglect to determine if any child in the family has been abused or neglected. If the children aren’t safe, the investigator starts protective services.

Prevention and Early Intervention • Manages community-based programs that prevent juvenile delinquency and child abuse and neglect.

Statewide Intake • Takes reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation from across the state through its Texas Abuse Hotline (1-800-252-5400) and through the website TxAbuseHotline.org 24-hours a day, every day of the year.

Call the Texas Abuse Hotline if you suspect that a child or adult who is elderly or has disabilities is being abused, neglected, or exploited.”
